Tyler Mifflin

Managing Director/Producer

SK Films

Statement of Purpose

The positive impact that giant screen films have had on me from a young age are enormous; they helped foster my love of and fascination with the outdoors, travel, wildlife and science. I am applying for my 2nd term on the board of the GSCA because of the immense respect and appreciation I have for the medium and my continued desire to help sustain a healthy association and increase the impact and reach our films have on the world but especially on youth.

I have had the incredible opportunity to learn firsthand the constant challenges (and joys) that come with not only directing and producing giant screen films, but in helping run a small production and distribution company with international distribution and marketing so integral to the success of SK Films. I know how important collaboration, good communication, testing and seeking feedback are to bringing these projects to life and how they fit into the overall industry. I have experience in many areas of film production from story development, financing, contract negotiations, script writing, pre-production, production, post-production as well as educational outreach. I believe this broad experience will assist me in my role as a board member of the GSCA, because I understand the challenges and demands the stakeholders in our industry face.

I also know the evolving challenges our industry must meet to stay competitive, and I intend to help bring in new perspectives and develop innovative strategies and partnerships to help the industry to reignite and sustain our audiences’ love of giant screen films. I have worked with many of the current board members in various capacities and I would be excited for the opportunity to continue working with the leaders of the giant screen community to help not only ensure the films our industry produces are of the highest quality both technically and story wise, but to work with our theaters and institution members to help strengthen ideas and approaches to marketing the tremendous positive impacts our industry has on the lives of our audiences.

The health of the giant screen industry has long been a priority for SK Films and I have a strong desire to ensure this association and the industry as a whole continues to evolve and grow in the fast changing media landscape. I am confident that my experience in the giant screen industry and passion for the content we create will be a positive strength to the board.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Bio

Tyler Mifflin began working for SK Films over 16 years ago but his passion for the Giant Screen/IMAX medium and its immersive power began at a young age when he went to see his first Giant Screen film at the Ontario Science Centre over 30 years ago. Those incredible film experiences had an immense impact on Tyler by bringing him to places he only dreamed he could travel to and introduced him to an amazing diversity of wildlife that filled him with boundless curiosity about how the natural world works.

That curiosity led Tyler to become a documentary filmmaker who has now produced, directed and filmed numerous projects in over 35 countries. Tyler most recently directed, produced  and shot the upcoming Giant Screen film Secrets of Great Salt Lake, and is also the co-creator, co-host, and director of the award-winning eco-adventure documentary TV series, The Water Brothers, which explores the world’s biggest environmental challenges and solutions. The 5th season of the show was recently awarded the Best Science & Nature Series at the 2024 Canadian Screen Awards.

Tyler is an integral part of the SK team with a strong background in production and a passion for creating exciting educational content.
