September , 2022—At 10:00 a.m. on August 13, 2022, the opening ceremony of The 12th Beijing International Film Festival Science and Technology Section & CSTM Popular Science Film Panorama was grandly opened at the 4D Cinema of the China Science and Technology Museum. More than 20 media, including Beijing Radio and Television, People’s Daily, and Science and Technology Daily, reported on site.
At the opening ceremony, Yin Hao, Director of the China Science and Technology Museum, and Chen Xiang, Deputy Secretary General of the Beijing International Film Festival Organizing Committee, delivered their respective speeches. Tammy Barrett, Executive Director of the Giant Screen Cinema Association, and Michael McConville, President-elect of the International Planetarium Society (IPS), sent congratulatory messages in the form of videos.

The results of the “Masterpiece Selection” were also announced at the opening ceremony. After five expert jury members and 220 public jury members viewed and selected the films on site, Wings Over Water and Horizon: Beyond the Edge of the Visible Universe won the best science communication film; Our Violent Planet won the best special effects design film; Pipi‘s Dream of Mars and T-guardians of Mini Tiger won the best domestic film; Octopus: Blue Planet II 4D Experience won the Best Audience Recommended Film.
Expert and public jury members voted on awards for the festival’s films.
The Special-Effect Film Technology Exchange and Trade Show were held in the afternoon of August 14, 2022, in a combination of online meeting and webcast, where three film technology companies made film equipment and technology demonstration, and 12 film companies such as K2 Studios, SK Films, and IWERKS presented their newly produced and released films.
According to statistics, the number of people who watched and participated in the event online reached 1,350.The festival showcased 34 outstanding films from 9 countries and will hold other educational activities for audiences and students, such as a science film fan salon. Through film screenings, science education activities, masterpiece selection, industry exchanges and other content, the festival will become a service platform for displaying excellent science and technology film achievements, resource pooling, and resource sharing.
