April 23, 2023—Last week Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced that Ontario Science Centre will move to Ontario Place as an anchor tenant. The move is part of the redevelopment plan of Ontario Place as a world-class, year-round destination. The science centre’s new home will be in a custom-built, state-of-the-art facility, as well as in the preserved and upgraded iconic Cinesphere and Pod complex. Construction is expected to begin in 2025, with an opening slated for 2028. In the meantime, Ontario Science Centre remains open at the current Don Mills and Eglinton location.
July 29, 2022—After 41 years of service, giant screen industry veteran Glenn Shaver has retired, effective July 1 of this year. Glenn’s career includes positions at Ontario Place Corporation and Ontario Science Centre, where the theaters under his direction won multiple industry awards. His leadership positions with GSCA included the Board of Directors and co-chair of two committees. Glenn was also the first recipient of the GSCA Big Shoe Award, which recognizes exemplary volunteers. Though Glenn is retiring from his full-time work, he will continue to do some work for Ontario Place as Senior Advisor and in his part-time business of over 40 years—Shaver and Co. Ltd.—specialising in the design and installation of commercial sound and video systems. Luckily for us, he plans to stay involved with GSCA and hopes to attend the conference in Chattanooga in September. We wish him the very best in his retirement and thank him for everything he has done for GSCA and the industry.
