Denver Museum of Nature & Science Upgrades to D3D Cinema’s Laser 4K 3D
February 17, 2022—D3D Cinema is proud to announce that the Denver Museum
of Nature & Science will upgrade and replace their existing IMAX
Digital system with a state-of-the-art laser-illuminated 4K 3D
projection system designed and integrated by D3D. The new projection and
sound systems will serve as the cornerstone in a generational upgrade
of the giant-screen theater in Phipps Auditorium, which will also
include a renovation of the seating and other public areas of the
theater. D3D will be integrating Barco's latest high-efficiency 40,000-lumen
laser projectors with a premium QSC surround-sound system, MDI
high-gain projection screen, a capable Crestron-based
alternative-content suite and an enhanced accessibility package. The
newly upgraded theater is scheduled to open to the public in Fall 2022.
February 17, 2022—Dr. Peter Popp, CEO of Reef Distribution, and Tina
Ratterman, President of BIG & Digital, have joined forces to expand
content, marketing, and support to fulldome and giant screen theaters
worldwide. Reef Distribution has taken over distribution, including administrative,
accounting, and technical support services, for the BIG & Digital
catalog, which includes titles such as In Saturn’s Rings, Expedition Chesapeake: a Journey of Discovery, Star Dreaming, Whale Super Highway, and Legends of the Northern Sky. Ratterman will lead and expand worldwide distribution and marketing.

experience Evans & Sutherland’s domed LED system at the Cosm
Experience Center in Salt Lake City on March 10, following the GSCA Film
Expo in Los Angeles on March 8-9. The GSCA Film Expo is the world’s
first industry conference to unveil this groundbreaking technology.
February 8, 2022—Jenn Bentz has been promoted to Director of Theaters at
the Pacific Science Center (PacSci) in Seattle, Washington. In her new
role, Bentz will manage PacSci’s two IMAX theaters, Laser Dome, arch
lighting, and production support. She will report to President and CEO
Will Daugherty and serve on the Executive Leadership Team.
February 8, 2022—Figueras is pleased to announce the recent hiring of David Leverton of
Leverton & Associates Ltd. as a planning specialist and sales
consultant to assist in identifying seating and storage requirements for
clients within the giant screen cinema, planetarium, museum, and
science center market in North America.
February 2, 2022—Discovery Place Science, the leading hub for science
learning in the Carolinas, announced today that it has replaced its IMAX
film projection system with IMAX’s next-generation laser technology
designed for 180-degree domed theatre environments thanks to a
partnership with Accenture. The theatre has been closed since March of
2020 and undergone extensive renovations, including installing IMAX’s
groundbreaking technology as well as new seats, carpet, speaker system
and air filtration. Discovery Place Science will welcome audiences back
to the upgraded Accenture IMAX® Dome Theatre on February 11 with the
release of The Beatles: Get Back – The Rooftop Concert.
February 2, 2022—Jana Bennett, whose four-plus-decade career in television and media included prominent leadership roles at the BBC, Discovery Communications and A+E Networks, has passed away from brain cancer at the age of 66. Jana oversaw the BBC's and Discovery Communications' forays into the giant screen world and was executive producer of the BBC giant screen production The Human Body, released in 2001. Our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues. 
January 25, 2022—Congratulations to Terra Mater Factual Studios and Cosmic Picture on The Arctic: Our Last Great Wilderness winning Most Inspiring Adventure Film at this year's Wild and Scenic Film Festival. This year's award-winning films were chosen from a field of over 110 films by a dedicated team of jurors.
January 13, 2022—As we get closer to the dates of the upcoming GSCA
Film Expo in Los Angeles on March 8-9 and Salt Lake City March 10, we
have received many inquiries about whether we are going ahead with the
in-person event. We have been following developments related to
the Omicron variant very closely. We also have talked to industry
stakeholders representing all segments of GSCA’s membership, and we sent
a poll to all our theater members last week asking if they plan to
attend. After gathering all this information, the GSCA Executive
Committee had a thorough discussion on Tuesday, January 11, and has
voted unanimously to proceed with in-person events in both Los Angeles
and Salt Lake City.
