New Giant Screen Film to Celebrate Salmon, Steelhead, and the Importance of Coastal Rivers

""July 28 , 2022—Officials from Denver-based Dorsey Pictures, Chicago-based Max McGraw Wildlife Foundation, and the Portland-based Native Fish Society have announced the production of Upstream: The Journey Home, a global giant screen and IMAX film event. The film will be narrated by rock music legend, avid angler, and conservationist Huey Lewis. The film will showcase the stunning environments salmon and steelhead occupy along with myriad other species including bears and whales that also depend on these ecosystems. Along the way, viewers will learn about these keystone species and what they’re telling us about the health of our planet.

Paul Wild Joins K2 Studios’ Distribution Team

""July 28, 2022—Paul Wild, former theater director of IMAX Victoria, has joined the K2 Studios distribution team taking over responsibility for most of recently retired Ed Capelle’s theaters in the U.S. and Canada, as well as other select theaters. Paul is contracting part-time with K2 while he continues to represent Destination Cinema on a part-time basis.

Royal BC Museum to Remain Open After Controversial Plan Is Halted

""July 8, 2022—We shared news in May that the Royal BC Museum in Victoria, British Columbia, would be closing on September 6 of this year as the province invested in building a new facility that was to open in 2030. After strong backlash to the costly and controversial plan, Premier John Horgan has pledged to consult with the public to determine how to proceed. ""June 3, 2022—Harold “Howard” Baker, projectionist for 40 years at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle, Washington, passed away on May 3 at the age of 94. The Facebook group Pacific Science Center Staff and Alumni Community recently posted, “His 40 years as the projectionist at the science center was only part of his story. He was a mentor, confidant, and cheerleader for all of us in the time we were with him.” Some of Howard's colleagues have shared their memories of him with us.

IMAX Theatre in Niagara Falls Demolished to Make Way for a 12-Story Hotel

""May 25, 2022—Two years after the Pyramid Place entertainment centre was demolished on an adjacent lot, the Niagara Falls IMAX Theatre was torn down by cranes last week, leaving only a pile of rubble after the long weekend. The two buildings in the entertainment district of the city were being cleared out to make way for a 12-story, 230-room hotel to be spread over the two sites. While the theatre’s website says a new location is to be announced soon, the now-demolished theatre was a mainstay in Niagara Falls for over 35 years, being built in the 1980s. ""May 19, 2022—IMAX Corporation (NYSE:IMAX) and Dolphin Entertainment (NASDAQ:DLPN) have entered into a multi-year agreement to jointly finance the development and production of a slate of feature-length documentaries for the global market. The first project greenlit by the partners is The Blue Angelsdeveloped and co-produced by Bad Robot Productions and Zipper Bros Films. The Blue Angels is in production and is expected to hit IMAX theaters in 2023.

Royal BC Museum to Close in September as Province Invests in New Building Opening in 2030

May 16, 2022—The Royal BC Museum in Victoria, British Columbia, will close its doors on September 6, 2022, as the province makes a historic $789 million investment to build a safer, more inclusive, and accessible modern facility. The modernized provincial museum is expected to open in 2030 and will reflect the experiences and perspectives of all who contributed to B.C.’s history. BC Archives services will not be disrupted and will remain open at the downtown site until it moves to its new permanent home at the collections and research building in 2025. IMAX Victoria, the museum’s gift shop, and the food trucks located at the museum will stay open through early 2023.
