April 23, 2023—Last week Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced that Ontario Science Centre will move to Ontario Place as an anchor tenant. The move is part of the redevelopment plan of Ontario Place as a world-class, year-round destination. The science centre’s new home will be in a custom-built, state-of-the-art facility, as well as in the preserved and upgraded iconic Cinesphere and Pod complex. Construction is expected to begin in 2025, with an opening slated for 2028. In the meantime, Ontario Science Centre remains open at the current Don Mills and Eglinton location.
April 24, 2023—Oceanic Films, HHMI Tangled Bank Studios, and SK Films announce the release of their upcoming documentary, Blue Whales: Return of the Giants 3D, the inspirational story of blue whales and their journey to recovery. Narrated by the award-winning actor Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings, Star Wars), and scored by Academy Award- winner Steven Price (Gravity), the film is set to open in giant screen theaters and museums on May 25, 2023. The film was produced by Oceanic Films with major funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and is the third collaboration between SK Films and HHMI Tangled Bank Studios (Amazon Adventure and Backyard Wilderness).
April 17, 2023—The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History announces the brand new “Jane & John Justin Foundation Omni Theater.” The full-scale renovation project will provide the theater with an ADA-accessible space, a new lobby and a completely digitized 8K LED viewing experience, powered by Cosm Technology. The Omni Theater will be the world’s first LED digital dome of its size in a museum.
April 17, 2023—The Grand Canyon Visitor Center–IMAX Theater, located one mile from the South Rim Park Entrance, has reopened its Giant Screen Theater after installing IMAX® with Laser, IMAX’s most advanced theater experience. The theater opens with the new release of Grand Canyon: Rivers of Time.
March 29, 2023—MacGillivray Freeman Films is nearing completion of principal photography for its upcoming 40-minute giant screen film Cities of the Future: Reimagining Our World, now slated for release starting February 16, 2024, to coincide with National Engineers Week. Produced by the same team that created the award-winning film Dream Big: Engineering Our World in partnership with American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Cities of the Future explores the visionary ideas and innovative solutions engineers are employing right now as they design the smart, sustainable cities of tomorrow.
March 29, 2023—MacGillivray Freeman Films is pleased to announce it has obtained the theatrical distribution rights for IMAX and giant screen theatres for the stunning new film Lasting Impressions, an immersive 3D art and music experience from producers Princeton Entertainment Group in association with Northern Gateway Films. The film will be available starting this Summer 2023 in both 2D and 3D formats.
March 9, 2023—Cosmic Picture Distribution has been awarded a $3 million grant by the National Science Foundation (NSF) for its upcoming project, Einstein’s Incredible Universe, a major media and outreach program designed to catalyze interest in space science and spark scientific curiosity in learners worldwide.
February 13, 2023 — The new space adventure, Little Major Tom: Into the Unknown, will premiere at Experimenta, located in Heilbronn, Germany, on Thursday, April 27, 2023. The world premiere event will include a live performance by Peter Schilling and his band, and Little Major Tom: Into the Unknown will also premiere at planetariums and fulldome theaters in Germany and around the world on April 27. Dr. Peter Popp, of both Softmachine and Reef Distribution, and musician Peter Schilling, singer of the international hit song “Major Tom (Coming Home),” teamed up to create Little Major Tom: Into the Unknown exclusively for fulldome theaters.
February 7, 2023—The Giant Screen Cinema Association (GSCA) is pleased to announce its 2023 International Conference locations. The conference will begin September 18 in Cincinnati, Ohio, at the Cincinnati Museum Center and The Robert D. Lindner Family OMNIMAX®. All delegates are invited to join us in Cincinnati and see giant screen innovations and films on the dome screen. Chartered buses will depart Cincinnati the evening of September 18 for Indianapolis, where the conference will continue September 19-21, 2023, at the IMAX Theater in the Indiana State Museum.
